Kwon Seong-dong: "Election Commission with Hiring Corruption, Special Auditor Act to be Proposed This Week"
"Election Commission Denies Family Recruitment Statistics,
Legal Action Will Follow If Proven False"
Kwon Seong-dong, floor leader of the People Power Party, stated on the 4th regarding the Election Commission, where recruitment irregularities were revealed, that "we will propose laws to introduce a special auditor to strengthen external monitoring and checks." He also expressed his intention to hold legal responsibility for the false reports made to the National Assembly concerning the recruitment irregularities.
At the floor strategy meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Floor Leader Kwon said, "The People Power Party will pursue five key preconditions for reforming the corrupt Election Commission: introducing a special auditor to strengthen external monitoring and checks, implementing a confirmation hearing by the National Assembly for the Secretary-General of the Election Commission, prohibiting judges from concurrently serving as Election Commission chairpersons, introducing a National Assembly inspection by the Public Administration and Security Committee for provincial and city Election Commissions, and revising the Election Commission Act enforcement regulations to expand the qualifications for appointing standing members of local Election Commissions to include external personnel." He added, "We will propose the special auditor law for the Election Commission within this week."
He also said, "The National Assembly has requested family recruitment statistics more than ten times, but the Election Commission responded with blatant lies, claiming that there were no related materials." He added, "If this is true, we will definitely hold them legally accountable."
Criticism was also raised regarding the failure to hold National Assembly-level urgent inquiries into the Election Commission. Floor Leader Kwon pointed out, "The People Power Party proposed an urgent inquiry for auditing the Election Commission's irregularities at the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee on the 28th of last month, but the Democratic Party rejected it." He further criticized, "This is proof that the Democratic Party does not recognize the seriousness of the Election Commission's illegal corruption and is rather protecting the corrupt Election Commission."

A People Power Party official said, "The Constitutional Court has ruled that the Board of Audit and Inspection cannot conduct duty inspections of the Election Commission," adding, "Since the Board of Audit and Inspection's duty inspection is considered incompatible with the Election Commission's constitutional status as an independent institution, we are considering ways for the National Assembly to conduct audits."
