Canada's Trudeau says "ready" for Trump's tariffs... coordinating response with Mexico
U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order imposing a 25% tariff, prompting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to announce a countermeasure on the 1st (local time).
Shortly after President Trump signed the order, Prime Minister Trudeau posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, "We did not want this, but Canada is ready," and added, "The U.S. has confirmed its intention to impose a 25% tariff on most Canadian products and a 10% tariff on energy starting from the 4th."
He said, "I met with provincial premiers and the cabinet today," and added, "I will soon have a call with Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico." Originally, Trudeau had scheduled a press conference at 6 p.m. local time that day, but he replaced his initial statement with a social media post at around 7:36 p.m.
