Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University Holds 11th Samcheong Forum
The Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University held the 11th Samcheong Forum at 7 p.m. on the 1st floor main conference hall of the Peace Building on the 8th.
At the forum, Yang Wook, a research fellow at the Center for Foreign Policy and National Security at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, gave a presentation titled "K-Defense Industry vs. NK-Defense Industry: The Impact of International Conflicts on Security on the Korean Peninsula."
Yang Wook conducted an in-depth analysis of the impact that recent intensifying international conflicts?such as the US-China hegemonic competition, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the Israel-Hamas war?have had on security on the Korean Peninsula. He particularly emphasized that North Korea's military buildup, nuclear weapons development, and the establishment of its own version of the "nuclear triad" are acting as significant variables in the security of the peninsula.
Yang Wook focused on how North Korea's military strategy is changing in the context of international conflicts and analyzed that North Korea's defense industry is being used as a key means of maintaining the Kim Jong Un regime. He further predicted that the strategic role of the K-defense industry will become even more important in preparing for future military challenges on the Korean Peninsula, such as North Korea's strengthened nuclear posture and the modernization of its conventional warfare capabilities.
After the presentation, there was a Q&A session with the forum participants.
This forum served as a meaningful opportunity to deeply analyze the impact of international conflicts on security and the defense industry on the Korean Peninsula, and it is evaluated as having provided a chance to reflect on the differences between the South and North Korean defense industries and their strategic significance.
