Mapo-gu Improves Light Environment to Enhance Safety and Save Energy
By November 30, replace 1,243 old security lights in 5 buildings with eco-friendly LED lights
Improve light environment to reduce sleep disturbance and glare discomfort, enhancing nighttime pedestrian safety
Mapo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Park Gang-su) is carrying out the "2024 Residential Area Light Environment Improvement Project" to replace 1,243 old security lights in residential areas by November 30.
This project involves an investment of 1.065 billion KRW to replace sodium security lights in five neighborhoods?Seongsan 2-dong, Mangwon 1-dong, Hapjeong-dong, Seogang-dong, and Gongdeok-dong?with high-efficiency eco-friendly light-emitting diode (LED) security lights.
The existing sodium security lights were criticized for dispersing light in all directions, illuminating only the air while leaving sidewalks dark, making crime prevention difficult and wasting energy.
To address these issues, Mapo-gu focused on improving lighting to prevent light pollution and create a bright and safe environment even at night.
The newly installed LED security lights have excellent color rendering, allowing visibility at night comparable to daytime, and direct light only toward the road, reducing disturbances such as sleep disruption and glare.
In particular, Mapo-gu plans to enhance safe nighttime walking environments by replacing the security lights' flashers with Internet of Things (IoT) flashers. When someone approaches within 25 to 30 meters of a security light equipped with an IoT flasher, the light's brightness automatically increases, illuminating dark paths.
Additionally, these LED lights consume only about half the power of the existing sodium lights, resulting in significant energy savings and reduced carbon dioxide emissions.
Mapo-gu plans to continue investigating areas causing light pollution and persistently promote light environment improvement projects.
