Samsung Interested in Acquiring Nokia Mobile Networks...Estimated at 13.4 Trillion Won
Samsung Electronics has shown interest in acquiring Nokia's mobile network assets, estimated to be worth about $10 billion (approximately 13.4 trillion KRW), according to foreign media reports.
Bloomberg News reported on the 29th (local time), citing sources, that some companies including Samsung Electronics are expressing interest in acquiring Nokia's mobile network assets.
Finnish telecommunications equipment company Nokia has recently been discussing the sale of its mobile network business division as part of its efforts to find new growth engines. These discussions are still in the early stages, with various scenarios being considered, ranging from selling part or all of the division, spinning it off, to merging with competitors. Sources estimated that the total value of Nokia's mobile network business division could reach about $10 billion.
According to sources, Samsung Electronics has expressed interest in acquiring some of Nokia's assets to strengthen its wireless network business that connects mobile devices including smartphones with communication infrastructure. Bloomberg News evaluated that while Samsung Electronics is a strong player in smartphones and memory semiconductors, it is smaller in scale compared to competitors like Huawei and Ericsson in the telecommunications equipment sector. However, Samsung Electronics did not respond to Bloomberg's request for confirmation.
Nokia's mobile network division supplies base stations, wireless technology, and servers to wireless communication operators worldwide. It is understood that about 44% of Nokia's total revenue last year came from this division. Once the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia eventually sold its mobile phone business after being surpassed by Samsung Electronics and Apple, and has since focused on manufacturing telecommunications network equipment such as devices that deliver signals to mobile devices.
