The Engineer Leadership Program is a chemical engineering leadership course that GS Caltex has been running for 15 years since 2010 to instill challenges and leadership in engineering students and to nurture talent in the field. It is GS Caltex’s future talent development program aimed at enhancing understanding and expertise in the refining industry.
This year, GS Caltex expanded the target schools for the Engineer Leadership Program from two to four (Sungkyunkwan University, Chonnam National University, Chung-Ang University, Hanyang University), recruiting a total of 76 students. To cultivate top-level talent in the energy industry, the program included various courses such as outlook and response strategies for the refining and petrochemical industries, understanding of production processes, and production DX (digital transformation), with education held every Friday.
Huh Se-hong, President of GS Caltex, has emphasized the necessity of talent development, stating that "people are the foundation of a company, and without talent, a company cannot achieve its vision, so multifaceted efforts must be made to nurture talent." The expansion of the Engineer Leadership Program also highlights the company’s commitment to creating social value through future talent development.
On May 24-25, GS Caltex arranged an opportunity for 76 chemical engineering undergraduates to directly observe the vibrant field of the energy industry at the Yeosu plant. On the first day, they toured state-of-the-art automated production facilities, including a refining facility capable of processing 800,000 barrels of oil per day and desulfurization facilities for gasoline and diesel, observing the production process of high-quality petroleum products and engaging in discussions with senior employees. On the second day, they visited 'GS Caltex Yeulmaru,' a complex cultural and arts space established and operated by GS Caltex with a total investment of 150 billion KRW as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts, as well as 'Jangdo,' an island of art, exploring sites that coexist with the local community in Yeosu.
Especially on the last day of the Engineer Leadership Program, June 21, students presented projects they had worked on throughout the semester at the GS Caltex Cheongpyeong Talent Development Center. Various ideas were proposed, including 'New processes/technologies that refineries should adopt in the future' and 'The appearance of refineries 10 years from now transformed by Digital Transformation.'
A GS Caltex official stated, "We hope the Engineer Leadership Program provides young talents who will lead the future energy industry with the necessary knowledge and experience and serves as a foothold for advancing the energy industry."
