Three Themes: Reading, Rest, Culture...Offering 500 Books Across Various Genres
Bean Bags and Tents Provide Comfort...Cultural Performances and Experience Events Blend with Natural Scenery
Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) operates the 'Gwangjin Outdoor Library' every third Sunday of the month at Achasan Eoullim Square.
The outdoor library, facing the natural scenery of Achasan, offers a unique experience of reading books in an open space. It redefines the concept of a library as a complex resting area combining three themes: reading, relaxation, and culture.
About 500 books are available here. Visitors can explore various genres such as novels, humanities, science, and self-development books. On the days the outdoor library is open, reading books recommended by the library's librarian is also a fun activity.
The resting area is designed with a comfortable 'picnic' concept. Soft bean bag sofas, shade tents, and tables are installed to give the feeling of being on an outing. Additionally, visitors can use rattan baskets for book storage and sunshades. Besides these, cultural and artistic performances and various experiential events are held.
The first session took place on the 19th. Along with a gayageum performance, keychain and eco bag decorating experiences attracted attention. On that day, over 600 family visitors came and showed great enthusiasm.
The next 'Outdoor Library' will operate on June 16 and will be available until October, excluding the hot summer months of July and August. Also, on the 25th, to commemorate 'Gwangjin Residents' Day,' a mobile bookstore called 'Library Damas' will be held at Children's Grand Park.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “We initiated the outdoor library to provide opportunities to enjoy diverse reading cultures beyond the indoor-limited library experience. We hope everyone enjoys reading books with family and friends while fully appreciating the nature of Achasan.”
