Seongdong-gu Provides Insurance Support Covering Up to 30 Million Won for Electric Wheelchair Accident Compensation
Automatic Enrollment and Cancellation for All Registered Disabled Persons in the Area, Insurance Support for Accidents Occurring During Operation of Electric Assistive Devices for Disabled Persons... Compensation Limit Increased from 20 Million to 30 Million Won, Burden Reduced from 50,000 to 30,000 Won
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that starting from February this year, it will support insurance enrollment for electric wheelchairs and other electric assistive devices for people with disabilities residing in the district.
People with disabilities living in Seongdong-gu are automatically enrolled in the insurance, which provides compensation of up to 30 million KRW to third parties in case of accidents while using electric assistive devices.
Many people with disabilities often face financial difficulties, making it hard to pay compensation if they become the at-fault party.
In response, Seongdong-gu has been supporting insurance enrollment for electric assistive devices for people with disabilities since last year. Since legal disputes after accidents increase social costs and conflicts, the local government has stepped in to ensure sufficient compensation for victims.
The insurance for electric assistive devices covers third-party liability for accidents occurring while operating electric wheelchairs and scooters, with coverage up to 30 million KRW per accident.
Notably, the compensation limit was increased from 20 million KRW to 30 million KRW compared to last year. The self-pay amount was also reduced from 50,000 KRW to 30,000 KRW, which is expected to significantly alleviate the financial burden on people with disabilities using electric assistive devices.
