Last Year's Container Cargo Volume Sets Record High
Container Throughput Stabilizes at 30 Million TEU
Last year, the volume of container cargo handled at domestic ports reached an all-time high.
According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on the 29th, the volume of container cargo handled at national trade ports last year was recorded at 30.14 million TEU, a 4.6% increase compared to the previous year (28.82 million TEU).
Despite external risks such as the high interest rate trend and the Russia-Ukraine war, Korea's ports recorded the highest cargo volume since their opening. Although Japan's import and export volume slightly decreased (-7.5%), the reopening of China influenced a 4.4% increase in China's import and export volume compared to the previous year.
The total port cargo volume handled at national trade ports last year was 1.55103 billion tons, a 0.04% decrease compared to the previous year (1.56171 billion tons). The import and export cargo volume was recorded at 1.32013 billion tons, a 1.0% increase from the previous year (1.30764 billion tons). Coastal cargo volume was 230.9 million tons, a 5.4% decrease from the previous year (244.06 million tons).
