Jongno-gu Sangchonjae and Go Hee-dong Art Museum Youth Artist Exhibition
Sangchonjae Hosts Lim Ji-yeon's 'Assembled Landscape' Until December 10... Exhibition of Paintings Exploring Spaces in the Artist's Memories... At Jongno-gu Gohui-dong Art Museum, Shin Je-hyun Presents 'Shapes of Light,' Featuring Numerous Works Combining Traditional Lacquer Inlay and Western Painting Materials
Jongno-gu (District Mayor Jeong Munheon) is operating the '2023 Young Artists Open Exhibition' at the local Hanok cultural space Sangchonjae and the Jongno-gu Hoheedong Art Museum.
Previously, in July, the works of selected artists from the open call to support young artists were exhibited sequentially, aiming to contribute to the revitalization of local culture.
First, at Sangchonjae, the exhibition 'Assembled Landscape' by artist Lim Ji-yeon will be held until December 10. It is an opportunity to appreciate several paintings dealing with spaces from the artist's memories.
In this exhibition, the artist defines the act of drawing as a record of the world in memory or imagination, intending to convey stories about the continuity of time and space. The blue monochrome was inspired by the sea closely encountered while living in Jeju Island, and the colorful rainbow hues representing diversity were inspired by the neon-sign-filled late-night city.
Next, the Jongno-gu Hoheedong Art Museum will host 'The Shape of Light' by artist Shin Je-hyun until December 14. Like Chunggok Hoheedong, the first Western-style painter in Korea, the artist majored in Western painting but attempted a compromise between Eastern and Western painting by mixing traditional mother-of-pearl inlay and Western painting materials to reveal their identity as a Korean.
Additionally, the artist presents works made by attaching stock indices and coin-related contents piece by piece with mother-of-pearl inlay. It is noteworthy that when hung horizontally, the piece resembles a graph, and when hung vertically, it takes the form of moonlight shimmering on a river or sea, called Yunsul.

A Jongno-gu official said, “This is a special exhibition held in a special place where the beauty of tradition and modernity harmonize,” adding, “We ask for much interest in this exhibition held at the ‘Hoheedong Art Museum,’ where Chunggok Hoheedong, Korea’s first Western-style painter, lived and worked for 41 years, and at the Hanok cultural space ‘Sangchonjae,’ which has provided various cultural contents for local residents.”
