This performance features conductor Kim Geon, who brings out the dynamism and potential of the orchestra with a youthful sensibility, the M Classic Festival Orchestra specially organized with principal players from major domestic municipal symphony orchestras for this festival, and pianist Kim Dohyun, this year’s artist selected by the Mapo Cultural Foundation, in collaboration.
The stage will showcase the essence of symphonic music with works by Offenbach, Prokofiev, and Tchaikovsky.
The concert will open with the overture to the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld, a masterpiece by Offenbach, the founder of operetta who composed 98 operettas throughout his life and led the golden age of operetta. It remains one of his most beloved works today.
Next, pianist Kim Dohyun will perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a grand piece filled with a feast of ever-changing melodies across four movements. Kim Dohyun, who won second place at the 2021 Busoni International Piano Competition, performed this piece in the final round, raising expectations even higher.
The finale will be Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, an autobiographical symphony expressing his complex emotions and philosophy, also known as Tchaikovsky’s “Fate Symphony.” He himself regarded it as the finest among his works, marking a new turning point in his life as a symphonic composer.
On the 12th, a “Pianist Kim Dohyun Master Class” for aspiring young musicians will be held at Mapo Art Center Studio 3. Four elementary, middle, and high school students majoring or wishing to major in piano, selected through an open call, will receive individual lessons in sequence. The lessons will be conducted with pieces chosen by the students, each lasting about 40 minutes, and participation is free of charge.
