'Oppenheimer' Craze Earns 1 Trillion Won Worldwide
The movie "Oppenheimer," a biography of American physicist Robert Oppenheimer, once revered as the "Father of the Atomic Bomb," has grossed over 1 trillion won worldwide.
According to the U.S. box office tracking site Box Office Mojo on the 4th (local time), since its release on July 21, Oppenheimer has earned a total of $852,984,000 (approximately 1.1255 trillion won) in the U.S. and global markets as of the day before.
Domestic revenue in the U.S. was $310,271,000 (about 409.4 billion won), while international revenue outside the U.S. was $542,713,000 (about 716.2 billion won).
U.S. entertainment media Variety reported, "This dark R-rated (viewers under 17 must be accompanied by an adult) biographical historical film, mainly set in the gloomy rooms of talkative scientists and politicians, is breaking box office expectations."
The film's production budget was around $100 million (approximately 132 billion won), resulting in significant profits for the investing and distributing company Universal Pictures and director Christopher Nolan.
Oppenheimer became Nolan's third highest-grossing film after his previous works "The Dark Knight Rises" ($1.08 billion) and "The Dark Knight" ($1 billion) within just seven weeks of release. It also ranked as the third highest-grossing Hollywood film released this year, following "Barbie" ($1.38 billion) and "Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion).
