Is the 'No Kids Zone' Disappearing?... Heated Debate on 'Human Rights Violation vs Consideration for Others' Begins
Jeju No-Kids Zone Ban Ordinance Proposed
Poll Shows 73% Support Allowing No-Kids Zones
As social controversy continues over 'No Kids Zones' that prohibit guests accompanied by infants or young children from entering, a legislative proposal has been announced in Jeju Province to ban the establishment of No Kids Zones. Public opinion surveys show that the majority support allowing No Kids Zones.
According to the Jeju Provincial Council on the 3rd, Song Chang-kwon, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, has taken the lead in proposing the 'Jeju Province Ordinance to Prohibit Designation of Child-Restricted Establishments (No Kids Zones)' and plans to collect related opinions until the 8th.
The ordinance specifies that the governor must make efforts to prohibit the designation of No Kids Zones in order to prevent discrimination against residents and human rights violations and to create an environment where children can grow up healthily.
To this end, the governor must carry out awareness-raising activities against discrimination, such as recommending and warning establishments to refrain from designating No Kids Zones.
The ordinance also includes provisions for guardian education on children's use of public places and institutional support for problems caused by children within business premises.
According to the Jeju Social Welfare Research Center, there are 78 No Kids Zones in Jeju, accounting for 14.4% of all No Kids Zones nationwide. Compared to other regions, there are many establishments targeting tourists, which seems to contribute to the high proportion of No Kids Zones.
Upon hearing this news, various reactions appeared on a mom caf?, such as "It's better to openly have No Kids Zones than to give kids a hard time," and "Honestly, there really weren't many places to go with kids in Jeju."
