Google and MS Join the Battle... Amazon Joins the 'Generative AI Craze'
Enterprise AI 'Bedrock' Launched
Amazon has joined the generative artificial intelligence (AI) competition by leveraging the world's largest cloud service. As competition around generative AI services heats up following the emergence of ChatGPT, Amazon, a latecomer, has differentiated itself by launching services targeting corporate clients rather than individuals.
On the 13th (local time), Adam Selipsky, head of Amazon Web Services (AWS), said, "Today, a completely new generative AI has been born," adding that this will enable many companies to develop and enhance their own AI.
The new enterprise cloud service 'Bedrock' unveiled by Amazon on the same day allows users to improve software performance by using multiple language models. Bedrock utilizes text-generating AI systems similar to ChatGPT, which sparked the AI chatbot craze.
Companies will be able to use Amazon's large-scale language models, Titan Text and Titan Embeddings, on AWS. Titan Text generates text like ChatGPT, while Embeddings is a language model that supports user customization through search.
Amazon also explained that language models developed by the startup 'AI 21', Anthropic's language model supported by Google, and Stability AI's model will be available.
Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO, previously stated in an interview in February, "Technology-focused companies like ours have long been researching large-scale generative AI models."
With Amazon's entry, competition in cloud services between Microsoft (MS) and Google is expected to intensify. MS has already introduced services equipped with OpenAI's GPT-4, and Google has announced services using its own LaMDA.
This market is led by Amazon with about 40% market share, followed by MS and Google with approximately 20% and 10%, respectively.
The biggest feature of Bedrock is 'customization.' CEO Jassy introduced Bedrock at its launch, saying, "Most companies want to use these large-scale language models, but good models cost billions of dollars and take years to train," adding, "What they want is customization, and that is exactly what Bedrock offers."
However, Amazon did not disclose details about the parameters of the Titan models or the data used for their training. The cost of the Bedrock service was also not revealed.
Amazon emphasized that its goal is to "democratize access" to AI development so that all companies can build their own apps, offering more efficient and affordable usage compared to competitors.
