Dongbei Chodong Branch
Wait a moment, before recommending Ttoganjip, here’s a quiz: "Where was DrinKit born?" The answer is Euljiro, the hippest neighborhood in Seoul! As an Euljiro commuter who goes to work there five days a week, I’d like to introduce some hidden gems in Euljiro. The star of today is Dongbei, a lamb skewer specialty restaurant where you can enjoy not only lamb skewers but also a variety of authentic Chinese dishes all at once. The editor’s recommended menu is the Mala Xiang Guo lunch set for two. It includes two bowls of rice, a generous portion of Mala Xiang Guo, and egg soup. As a self-proclaimed food expert and Mala fanatic, I rate this Mala Xiang Guo close to 100 points. Although you cannot customize the ingredients to your preference, it contains various ingredients such as bean sprouts, tofu skin, dried tofu, ham, and mushrooms, adding the fun of choosing what to eat. It combines the spicy and numbing flavors essential to Mala, making it a very satisfying place considering the price of 20,000 KRW. If you’re tired of the same lunch every day in Euljiro, visiting three times would be worthwhile.

Kkotjiro
As an Euljiro commuter recommending lunch menus, I cannot leave out dinner recommendations. For dinner, I recommend the izakaya Kkotjiro. Located in the printing alley of Euljiro, also known as Hipjiro, it is an authentic Japanese-style skewered grilled meat specialty restaurant. Besides skewers, it offers various menus, making it a great place for a casual drink. The must-try menu at Kkotjiro is the 10 kinds of Yakitori. Fresh chicken is butchered daily in-house, then grilled over charcoal with a special tare sauce. The 10 types of skewers include chicken thigh, chicken breast, chicken wings, tenderloin, neck meat, and skin, allowing you to enjoy according to your preference. The 10 kinds of Yakitori cost 29,900 KRW. If you need soup, be sure to add the Karai Jiro Nabe. It means spicy Euljiro soup and is reminiscent of soft tofu stew but with the added aroma of Sichuan peppercorns used in Mala, making the spiciness very appealing. The price is 23,900 KRW.

750 Sikdang
The biggest charm of Budae Jjigae (Army Stew), delicious in spring, summer, fall, and winter, might be the ham. Although they also serve iron plate steak and kotari jjim, don’t forget that the Budae Jjigae is so good it could easily be the main dish. The handmade ham and secret seasoning sauce at 750 Sikdang boast a deep and savory flavor, and the generous amount of minced garlic makes it spicy and flavorful. The regular 750 Budae Jjigae contains chewy handmade ham generously, and the spicy Budae Jjigae includes more than three different kinds of ham in addition to the handmade ham, allowing for a diverse experience. It’s truly spicy and sharp, so those sensitive to spice should be cautious. The price is 11,000 KRW per serving.
