"My annual salary is 70 million won, my boyfriend's is 38 million won... I'm worried about breaking off the engagement"
Online Community Bulletin Board Post Draws Attention
A prospective bride preparing for marriage has posted that she is considering breaking off the engagement due to financial reasons, drawing attention.
On the 29th, A posted on an online community board, saying, "My annual salary is 70 million won, but my boyfriend's is only 38 million won," and added, "I have paid for all the expenses involved in preparing for the wedding."
She said she paid the 4 million won deposit and interim payment for the wedding hall, 2.7 million won for the studio, dress, and makeup, and 2.2 million won for her boyfriend’s tailored suit. She also mentioned that she is in a position to cover upcoming costs such as the honeymoon, house, and home appliances.
She continued, "During our relationship, I found out that my boyfriend had a debt of about 45 million won, so I tried to break up with him but was persuaded to stay." She added, "Two years later, I have paid about 11 million won from my family’s home, and after recovering money he was scammed out of and monthly repayments, I thought about 7 million won remained, but with 3 million won in student loan interest added, he said the remaining debt is 10 million won."
Despite this situation, A said she had been pushing forward with the marriage but started considering breaking off the engagement because of her "parents’ vitamins."
A explained, "My parents ran out of vitamins they were taking, so I tried to buy them through overseas direct purchase, but they said they would order them themselves and told me to save money. That really woke me up." She lamented, "I have given up all my hobbies and feel frustrated because I can’t even buy vitamins for my parents, yet my boyfriend is giving pocket money to his parents and wants to buy lots of birthday and Children’s Day gifts for his nephews and nieces."
She added, "Before, I thought we would pay off the debt before marriage and I would work harder, but seeing that he absolutely won’t give up giving pocket money to his family and feels hurt about it, I think there’s no solution." She confessed, "I’m planning to talk to him tonight, and if he insists on the pocket money, I’m considering notifying him of the breakup." She also asked for advice, saying, "For those who started out with debt, are you living happily? Did you resolve it well?"
