"Drinking a Lot of Cola Increases Fertility"…Unusual Research Findings
Chinese Researchers: "Increased Male Hormone Levels"
However, Excessive Intake Not Recommended
"Risks Include Obesity, Heart Disease, and Hypertension"
There is growing interest in the claim that the representative carbonated drink 'Cola' promotes the secretion of male hormones and enhances reproductive ability.
On the 21st (local time), the British media 'Daily Mail' reported, citing research results from a team at Xibei Minzu University in China, that cola has the effect of improving male reproductive ability.
The research team conducted an experiment to prove the effects of cola by dividing 150 male mice into five groups. Four groups were given △50% Coca-Cola mixed with water △100% Coca-Cola △50% Pepsi-Cola mixed with water △100% Pepsi-Cola, respectively, while the remaining group was given only water. During the 15-day experiment, the mice were allowed to drink as much of the allocated cola or water as they wanted.
Afterward, the research team measured the testicular mass of the mice at the start of the experiment and after 5, 7, 10, 13, and 15 days. The results showed that the testosterone levels of the mice that drank cola were significantly higher compared to the other groups. Consequently, the testicular size also increased.
For example, the testosterone concentration of the mice that drank only water was about 23 nanomoles (nmol/ℓ). In contrast, the testosterone concentration of the mice that consumed 100% Coca-Cola or Pepsi-Cola reached 30 nmol/ℓ. These research results were published in the Journal of Secretion Science.
Excessive consumption is not recommended... Risks of obesity, heart disease, and hypertension
Although several experiments measuring reproductive ability using caffeine have been conducted before, this is reportedly the first study using cola.

However, the research team emphasized that excessive consumption of cola is not recommended. The team stated, "There is a risk of exposure to various health problems such as obesity, heart disease, and hypertension," and added, "We do not recommend drinking large amounts of cola."
