On the 26th, Gangwon Province and the Ministry of Land discuss expansion of Gangwon's metropolitan road and rail networks
Request for extension of Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit (GTX) to Chuncheon and Wonju
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gangwon Province and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will hold a regional council meeting on the afternoon of the 26th to discuss balanced development plans for the Gangwon region.
According to the province, the regional council is a practical forum where the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport visits cities and provinces to listen to local issues and suggestions, discuss future promotion plans, and provide substantial support for regional balanced development.
At the meeting, the province will request attention and support for ▲discovering new projects through the reorganization of regional development plans ▲amendment of the 「Act on Regional Development and Support」 ▲extension of GTX to Wonju and Chuncheon ▲early commencement of the Yongmun~Hongcheon metropolitan railroad ▲construction of the Wonju~Cheorwon railroad ▲simultaneous two-way commencement of the Dongseo Expressway (Yeongwol~Samcheok) ▲extension of the Jungang Expressway (Chuncheon~Cheorwon) ▲and promotion of border area station district development projects.
The province will especially emphasize the need for early promotion of the Yeongwol~Samcheok section, which was included as a key project in the 2nd highway construction plan to complete the East-West 6-axis, and will request a preliminary feasibility study for simultaneous two-way commencement to secure accessibility to the high-speed transportation network in the southern Gangwon area.
Additionally, the province will include reviewing the 10-year 'regional development plan' to reorganize (adjust) feasible and promotable projects, discover new projects, and secure national funding to support balanced development of underdeveloped and hub areas.
After the meeting at the provincial office, a visit to the Gangwon Thermal Energy Convergence Cluster site, designated as an investment leading district in 2021, will be arranged to receive a project briefing.
Attendees of the council are expected to include Kim Jin-tae, Governor of Gangwon Province; Kim Myung-seon, Vice Governor; Kim Han-su, Director of Planning and Coordination Office; Moon Seong-yo, Director of the Land and Urban Office at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport; Kim Seok-ki, Director of Land Policy Division; and Jeong Ui-gyeong, Director of Wonju Regional Land Management Office.
