Market Kurly Surpasses 5 Million Orders Using Purple Box
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Retail tech company Kurly announced on the 14th that the number of orders using reusable packaging through its ‘Purple Box’ has surpassed 5 million within one year of its launch.
Launched by Market Kurly in July last year, the ‘Purple Box’ is a reusable packaging developed through years of research. With a generous capacity of about 47 liters, it can keep refrigerated and frozen products cold for more than 10 hours, ensuring fresh and safe delivery of goods. It uses fabric that has passed friction tests, allowing for semi-permanent use.
Kurly currently operates the Purple Box and personal cooler box delivery services as part of its reusable packaging service. The personal cooler box service is designed for customers who find it burdensome to purchase additional reusable packaging. Customers only need to go through a certification process to verify that their personal cooler box is indeed capable of refrigeration.
It was found that the use of reusable packaging by Kurly over the past year has reduced the use of paper boxes by approximately 9 million units. This is equivalent to protecting 1,823 thirty-year-old trees. In April, eight months after the launch of the Purple Box, about 4.45 million paper boxes were saved, and an additional 4.55 million paper boxes were reduced in the following four months.
The excellent cooling effect of the Purple Box has also led to a decrease in the use of cooling materials. After adopting reusable packaging, the use of ice packs decreased by 5% compared to paper box usage, and dry ice usage also dropped by 2.4%. Kwak Kyungseon, manager of Kurly’s packaging planning team, said, “This achievement is even more meaningful considering that last summer recorded the second hottest weather since the Korea Meteorological Administration began observations, and this year’s early heat started as early as May.”

That year, it launched the packaging innovation project ‘All Paper Challenge,’ which changed all packaging materials for its Saetbyeol delivery service to recyclable materials. In 2020, Kurly established a packaging research lab to continue its packaging research.
