Gwangju Dong-gu "Let's Restore the Former Glory of Chungjang-ro"... Establishing a History and Culture Center
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is set to actively promote the 'Chungjang History and Culture Center Development Project' for the revitalization of the old downtown area.
The Chungjang History and Culture Center will be established in Chungjang22, a hub space for urban regeneration, and will be designed as an exhibition and experience space showcasing the history of Chungjang-ro. It is scheduled to open around October.
Visitors will be able to see videos recreating the old alleys of Chungjang-ro, the 'Chungjang History Webtoon' currently being produced as part of a preliminary urban regeneration project, and specialized products planned to be created through collaboration between Chungjang-ro artisans and local creators.
Dong-gu has been actively working to restore the former glory of Chungjang 4~5-ga by launching the Chungjang 45 Win-Win Development Council for the mutual development of Chungjang-ro, discovering issues facing Chungjang 4~5-ga, and promoting measures to revitalize the alleyway commercial districts.
Chungjang-ro holds historical significance as the site of anti-Japanese independence movements during the Japanese colonial period, the April 19 Revolution after liberation, and the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. It was also the commercial center of the Honam region, but has entered a period of decline due to the downturn of the old downtown commercial district and the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
