Jeonnam Province Systematically Manages 'World Heritage Korean Tidal Flats'
Establishment of the Gaetbeol Management Committee... Advisory Role Including Drafting Basic Conservation and Management Plans
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeollanam-do is accelerating systematic tidal flat conservation and management.
The province announced on the 6th that it has launched the ‘Jeollanam-do Tidal Flat Management Committee,’ which will serve as a policy advisory and field communication channel.
The Tidal Flat Management Committee consists of 19 experts from the public, private, and academic sectors, including universities, provincial council members, the Korea Marine Environment Corporation, the Korea Maritime Institute, the Gwangju-Jeonnam Research Institute, and private organizations, covering fields such as marine environment, biology, culture, education, and World Heritage registration.
Based on the ‘Jeollanam-do Tidal Flat Conservation and Management Ordinance’ enacted in April, the term of office is two years.
The committee advises on matters necessary for the wise use and conservation of tidal flats, including establishing the basic plan for tidal flat conservation and management in Jeollanam-do and discovering new policies.
In particular, it serves as a communication channel on-site regarding the basic concept of the National Tidal Flat Wetland Garden, the expansion of marine protected areas, and strengthening domestic and international networks. It will also raise its voice on tidal flat conservation and management issues amid development pressures.
Following the committee’s launch, Jeollanam-do explained at a meeting the ▲ province’s tidal flat conservation and management policy directions and current issues ▲ the basic concept of the National Tidal Flat Wetland Garden and the progress of the preliminary feasibility study.
Subsequently, a heated discussion was held on the significance of Jeonnam tidal flats, which are registered as a World Heritage site and account for 90% of Korea’s tidal flats.
