This is the first case of a domestic small and medium-sized software company acquiring a global industry leader, and it is evaluated as laying the groundwork for entering the global electronic document market in the U.S., Europe, and other regions.
Artifex, established in 1993, is a first-generation global PDF market company. It possesses a high-performance PDL (Page Description Language) engine developed in-house, which expresses page information for displaying or printing documents, as well as mobile office technology. It supplies electronic document software engine licenses to global printer manufacturers such as Google, Adobe, HP, Kyocera, Oracle, cloud service vendors, and large software companies.
Junghee Kim, CEO of Epapyrus, stated, "Artifex is also a company where I worked as a developer before founding Epapyrus." He added, "They hold 25 patents related to PDF document and graphic processing, and especially have strengths in mobile document viewers and mobile office sectors. We judged that combining this with Epapyrus’s electronic document expertise will create explosive synergy."
With this acquisition, Epapyrus has expanded its size and prepared a foundation for full-scale growth in the global electronic document market. In line with the market trend shifting to cloud environments, it plans to launch software-as-a-service (SaaS) based electronic document solutions. Already, in November last year, it registered its flagship product, the PDF streaming viewer ‘StreamDocs,’ on the Naver Cloud Platform Marketplace. Additionally, it plans to introduce new products optimized for accessibility and usability in mobile environments as global cloud services.
Epapyrus is pursuing a ‘two-track’ strategy with electronic document and artificial intelligence businesses, achieving sales of 9.3 billion KRW last year and maintaining growth for five consecutive years. Through this acquisition, it aims to double its sales in a short period. An initial public offering (IPO) is expected to be pursued as early as 2024.
