Do You Like Cocktails? Review of Two Canned Martinis♥
My Room Becomes a Cocktail Bar!
There are two main types of drinking styles. One prefers lively pojangmacha-style pubs, while the other enjoys drinking in a calmer atmosphere at bars. The editor, who somehow always ends up in the corner whenever visiting a pojangmacha, is the type who prefers bars.
Occasionally, the editor enjoyed having a drink or two at a bar for a change of mood, but due to the impact of COVID-19, outings became less frequent, naturally reducing visits to drinking establishments. Although there was an attempt to make cocktails at home because of craving the ones from bars, somehow, despite following the recipes exactly, the taste failed, and the editor stopped making cocktails at home.
While forgetting what a cocktail bar was like, an interesting product was discovered: canned martinis that don’t require making yourself, just open and drink! This is irresistible. As soon as it caught the eye, it was immediately added to the shopping cart.
The editor chose two types of canned martinis. One was the ‘Shake Baby Shake Passion Fruit Martini,’ and the other was the ‘All Shook Up Passion Fruit Martini.’ Both products are produced in the UK and have the same volume of 250ml each.
Shake Baby Shake Passion Fruit Martini
The first product to taste was the ‘Shake Baby Shake Passion Fruit Martini.’ It has a light purple background with zebra patterns, giving off a somewhat hipster vibe. It is made with passion fruit juice and vodka concentrate, and its alcohol content is 4%, much lower than the martinis ordered at cocktail bars.
When poured into a glass, it looks more like mango juice than alcohol. The aroma and taste were closer to tropical fruit juice, a mix of pineapple and passion fruit, rather than liquor. Instead of a refreshing taste, the tropical fruit’s characteristic sweetness was very strong, and the rich sweetness gave it a somewhat heavy feel.
Although it contains vodka, the bitterness typically felt when drinking a martini was absent, likely due to the overpowering sweetness. After finishing one can and touching the now warm cheeks, the editor only then remembered, “Oh right, this was alcohol.” It’s a dangerously sweet drink that could easily get you drunk if you gulp it down like juice.
All Shook Up Passion Fruit Martini
Next to taste was the ‘All Shook Up Passion Fruit Martini,’ whose cute can design catches the eye. Its alcohol content is 4.5%, about 0.5% higher than the previously introduced product, and it is also made by combining passion fruit juice and vodka concentrate.
While the ‘Shake Baby Shake Martini’ was a deep yellow with an orange tint, the ‘All Shook Up Martini’ has a lighter and clearer yellow hue. The taste and aroma were lighter as well; compared to the rich sweetness dominating the ‘Shake Baby Shake Martini,’ this one had a more tangy flavor. It tastes like a yogurt-flavored My Chew candy with a slight tropical fruit scent added. It is sweet, but the sweetness feels light and refreshing rather than heavy.
The alcohol flavor passes by subtly along with the sweetness. There is a very slight bitterness, but if you didn’t look at the numbers on the can, you might think the alcohol content was below 2%. Although it has a higher alcohol content than a radler, it feels like drinking a soft drink.
Overall Review
The two canned martinis tasted were actually closer to juice than martinis. Drinking them felt like drinking juice labeled ‘martini,’ so if you usually enjoy classic martinis, you might be disappointed. However, the fact that you can create a cocktail bar vibe at home and easily enjoy tasty cocktails, even if they don’t taste very similar to martinis, was quite appealing. If you miss going to cocktail bars, setting a soft light and playing music while enjoying these canned martinis could be a delightful experience.
