The ‘Gyeongbuk Citizen Award’ began when Gyeongbuk Province designated October 23, 1996, as ‘Gyeongsangbuk-do Citizen’s Day.’
This day commemorates the year 675 AD when Silla repelled the 200,000-strong Tang army at the Battle of Maechoseong, laying the foundation for the unification of the Three Kingdoms.
To honor this, every year, the province discovers and awards outstanding citizens who have devoted themselves to community development in various fields and have elevated the honor of Gyeongsangbuk-do.
This year, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the large-scale commemorative ceremony was canceled, and the awards ceremony was held with only the recipients and a minimal number of attendees.
The ceremony was broadcast live online through Gyeongbuk Province’s official YouTube channel, Boiso TV, and the recipients’ families watched the ceremony at the provincial government’s multipurpose hall.
The recipients of this year’s Citizen Awards were finally selected as 42 individuals across categories such as overcoming COVID-19, job creation, inspiring Gyeongbuk, and community development, after local investigations and evaluations by the merit review committee from candidates recommended by Gyeongbuk Province and city and county governments.
