MS Love Call Discord, $500 Million Fundraising
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] The voice chat app for gaming, Discord, has raised $500 million (approximately 585.4 billion KRW) in a new funding round, Bloomberg reported on the 16th (local time).
The funding round, led by Dragoneer Investment Group, also saw participation from existing investors such as Fidelity Management and Franklin Templeton.
Discord is a messenger that allows communication via video, voice, and text. It gained popularity among online gamers and significantly expanded its business during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, its monthly active users (MAU) reach 150 million.
Jason Citron, co-founder and CEO of Discord, said in an email statement, "The funds raised from this investment will be used for new facility investments and office expansion."
Earlier this year, Discord engaged in acquisition talks with several companies including MS but halted the negotiations and shifted its focus to an IPO.
