President Moon: "Getbeol to be UNESCO World Heritage... Will support ecosystem conservation"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in congratulated the designation of the "Korean Tidal Flats" as a UNESCO World Heritage site, calling it "joyful news," and pledged to support the preservation of the ecosystem.
On the 27th, President Moon stated through a social network service (SNS) message, "The Korean Tidal Flats have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is very joyful news."
According to the Cultural Heritage Administration on the 26th, the 44th World Heritage Committee made the final decision to inscribe the Korean Tidal Flats on the World Heritage List. This is the second natural heritage site after the "Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes" in 2007.
President Moon said, "This is the result of the joint efforts of the registration promotion team and related ministries to actively promote and persuade the valuable significance of our tidal flats," adding, "Now, our country has fifteen World Heritage sites."
He also mentioned that the main reason for the World Heritage inscription was the recognition of its value as "an important habitat for the conservation of biodiversity on Earth," noting that the tidal flats are a crucial area for the survival of endangered waterbirds such as the Far Eastern Curlew.
