Daegu City Begins Construction of Public and Convenience Facility Complex 'Happy Dormitory' ... Housing 1,000 University Students
Construction on Former Daegu National Tax Service Education and Culture Center Site ... Completion by End of Next Year
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Daegu City completed the construction commencement report for the 'Happy Dormitory Construction Project' to improve housing welfare for local university students on the 10th and began full-scale construction from the 16th.
The Daegu Happy Dormitory will be built on the site of the former Daegu Regional Tax Office Education and Culture Center (25, Seoseong-ro 20-gil, Jung-gu), which is city-owned land, with a total floor area of 25,452㎡, consisting of 2 basement floors and 14 above-ground floors. It is scheduled to be completed in the second half of next year.
The project cost totals 44.8 billion KRW, including 5 billion KRW from the national government, 8.8 billion KRW from the city, and 31 billion KRW from the Housing and Urban Fund. The dormitory will have approximately 500 rooms (accommodating 1,000 people) and include convenience facilities such as seminar rooms, fitness rooms, lounges, reading rooms, and a cafeteria.
The Daegu Happy Dormitory Construction Project is a collaborative effort jointly promoted by Daegu City and the Korea Private School Promotion Foundation (Chairman Ji Byeong-mun) through the establishment of a special purpose corporation (SPC). Daegu City provides the site, and the Korea Private School Promotion Foundation covers the construction costs.
This is the first case nationwide of constructing a complex facility that includes public facilities and citizen convenience facilities. Notably, in December 2019, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport selected this project as a new 'Urban Regeneration Recognition Project,' securing 5 billion KRW in national funds, which allowed the additional construction of the previously insufficient parking facilities.
In terms of location, it is conveniently accessible, being 800 meters from Jungangno Station, and within a 5 km radius are Kyungpook National University, Yeungjin College, and Yeungnam College of Science and Technology. It is a prime spot where densely located convenience facilities, cultural facilities, and academies for technical and certification courses in nearby Dongseongno can be easily accessed.

Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin stated, "The Daegu Happy Dormitory will be built as a complex building including convenience facilities that residents can use together, linked with urban regeneration of the deteriorated surrounding areas of the old downtown. Once completed in the second half of next year, it will greatly help university students' housing welfare and universities facing crises due to declining school-age populations."
