Biden on Trump's Impeachment Trial: "What Must Happen"
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] U.S. President Joe Biden said that the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump is "something that must happen."
On the 25th (local time), President Biden told a CNN reporter at the White House that he believes the impeachment push against President Trump by Congress "must happen." While acknowledging that the impeachment situation could affect legislative tasks and the schedule for cabinet confirmations, he mentioned, "If it doesn't happen, there will be worse consequences."
He expressed a cautious stance regarding the impeachment outcome. He said, "(The Senate) hasn't changed much," and predicted that it is unlikely that more than 17 Republican senators will support Trump's impeachment. The U.S. House of Representatives initiated impeachment proceedings against former President Trump on charges of "incitement of insurrection" following the pro-Trump supporters' storming of the Capitol on the 6th of this month.

The House passed the impeachment resolution on the 13th and sent it to the Senate on the 25th. The Senate impeachment trial is scheduled to begin in the second week of February. For the Senate to pass the impeachment resolution, a two-thirds majority vote is required. Currently, both the Democratic and Republican parties hold 50 seats each, meaning that at least 17 Republican senators must vote in favor of the impeachment for it to pass.
