Growing Anti-Huawei Front... Samsung 5G Equipment Receives Green Light in Europe and India as Well
UK bans new purchases of Huawei equipment from 2021
India restricts Huawei and ZTE bids in 5G deployment
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Samsung Electronics has secured a contract to supply 5G equipment and solutions to Verizon, signaling a positive outlook for future orders in global markets such as Europe and India. As the 'anti-Huawei sentiment' spreads in these regions, the possibility of additional exports is increasing.
According to industry sources on the 7th, as the U.S. government demands countries exclude Huawei equipment and increases pressure on telecom operators using Huawei gear, Samsung is expected to benefit from this in future equipment orders.
Since 2021, the UK has banned new purchases of Huawei equipment and announced plans to remove Huawei equipment from its 5G network by 2027. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advised that it can no longer guarantee protection from risks posed by Huawei equipment, accelerating moves to phase out Huawei. The Indian government has also decided to restrict bids from Huawei and ZTE in the 5G network construction process. Following border clashes between India and China and the deterioration of bilateral relations, India has joined the anti-Huawei measures alongside the UK and Australia.
According to market research firm Dell'Oro, Samsung Electronics held a 16.6% share of the global 5G base station market in 2019, ranking fourth behind Huawei (32.6%), Ericsson (24.5%), and Nokia (18.3%). Samsung has rapidly expanded its overseas order performance and market share by signing 5G supply contracts with Canada's Vid?otron in December last year, US Cellular in the U.S. in February this year, Spark in New Zealand in March, and Telus in Canada in June.
