60s Actor Sentenced to Prison for Borrowing Money from Parents of Acting Academy Students and Not Repaying
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Min Jun-young] A 60-year-old actor who borrowed tens of millions of won from the parents of students attending the acting academy he runs and failed to repay has been sentenced to prison.
The Gwangju District Court Criminal Division 6 (Judge Yoon Bong-hak) announced on the 25th that A (60), who was prosecuted on charges of fraud, was sentenced to six months in prison.
The court reprimanded, "The crime is very serious as he deceived the parents of students attending the acting academy he operates by proposing appearances on broadcasts and other opportunities to embezzle money."
It added, "Considering that he tried to evade criminal responsibility for his actions against the victim, that the victim wants punishment, and that although he promised to repay the money by drafting a notarized document in December 2017, the principal has not yet been repaid, the sentence was determined accordingly," explaining the reason for sentencing.
A was previously prosecuted on charges of borrowing 40 million won from B, a parent of a student attending the acting academy he runs, five times in total from March 24, 2016, to March 28, 2017, and failing to repay it.
During the crime, A told B that he would get B's child to appear on broadcasts and said, "I need urgent funds, so if you lend me money, I will repay the principal and interest after receiving 300 million won in investment funds I have invested in six months."
