City Councilor Fined for Assaulting Companion While Drunk... Also Made Abusive Remarks Citing Position
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] A city council member who assaulted an acquaintance at a karaoke room while intoxicated was sentenced to a fine.
The Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 5 (Judge Lee Sang-yeop) announced on the 7th that it sentenced Ulsan city council member A (49), who was charged with injury and defamation, to a fine of 500,000 won.
The court stated the reason for sentencing, saying, "Considering that the defendant reached a settlement with the victim, the minor degree of injury, and the victim's withdrawal of the intention to punish for defamation, a fine was imposed."
A was prosecuted on charges of hitting the face of an acquaintance with a fist, causing injuries requiring two weeks of medical treatment, after a dispute broke out at a karaoke room in Nam-gu, Ulsan, in December 2018.
At the time, A was intoxicated and reportedly made abusive remarks such as "Do you think a city council member is easy?" and "How dare you mess with a city council member?"
After the incident became controversial, A held a press conference denying the assault and claimed that he was the one who was assaulted.
