Female Army Captain Donates Hair Grown for 4 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu] A Navy female captain who donated hair she had grown for four years to help pediatric cancer patients is gaining attention. The protagonist is Captain Kim Hyun-ah, belonging to the 72nd Squadron of the Navy's 7th Mobile Task Force.
Since her commissioning in June 2015, Captain Kim donated 45 cm of hair on the 19th to the Eomeona Movement Headquarters, asking that it be used for pediatric cancer patients. The Eomeona Movement Headquarters is an abbreviation for the "Hair Sharing Movement for Young Cancer Patients." The organization collects hair donations of 25 cm or longer to make special wigs, which are then donated to children with pediatric cancer who suffer severe hair loss due to chemotherapy.
Wigs for cancer patients undergo antibacterial and sterilization treatments to prevent side effects, as patients have weakened immune systems during chemotherapy and are sensitive even to minor wounds. Because of this, these wigs are sold at prices 2 to 3 times higher than regular wigs, which is known to be a financial burden for patients.
Captain Kim said, "A grateful heart is the greatest driving force for sharing," and added, "As a soldier, if my small actions can become a small spark of hope for citizens going through difficulties, I will continue to engage in such sharing activities anytime."
