MWC Shanghai Officially Canceled... Compensation Policy Not Announced
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The 'Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2020,' which was scheduled to be held in Shanghai, China, from the end of June, has been officially canceled.
The Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) recently announced that considering the restrictions on entry and exit imposed by various countries due to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and the international concerns, it has been deemed difficult to hold MWC Shanghai 2020 as originally planned.
GSMA stated, "We will consult with government and health authorities regarding the date and location for holding a regional event in China in the second half of 2020," and added, "We will confirm and announce whether the event will be held within the next few months."
MWC Shanghai 2020 was scheduled to be held from June 30 to July 2 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC) under the theme ‘{$_智有道 聯无界·Limitless Intelligent Connectivity.’
Although it is a regional event different in nature from the 'Mobile Olympics' MWC held every February in Barcelona, Spain, the number of visitors was expected to reach 75,000. About 500 exhibition booths were planned, with nearly half expected to be occupied by global companies such as Ericsson and Qualcomm, alongside Chinese companies like Huawei, China Telecom, CICT, and Oppo.
The announcement did not include any compensation policies for companies that had already applied to participate in MWC Shanghai 2020.

GSMA disclosed detailed information about MWC Shanghai last December and had been accepting participation applications from companies and stakeholders through the official website until early this month. Compared to events like CES Asia (June 10?12), which was held around the same time and had already announced cancellations and compensation plans to prevent confusion, GSMA’s response has been criticized as delayed.
